KANDAHAR, Afghanistan ā€” Canada’s chief of defence staff says strengthening the Afghan National Army has become his first priority.

General Rick Hillier says more Canadian personnel will be shuffled to assist in training and mentoring the growing security force.

There are now two full battalions of ANA troops, a third will graduate in July.

Hillier says a strong national army is essential to the eventual security and stability of Afghanistan, and the question has now become how much support Canada can give them to grow.

The general was in Kandahar this weekend for a meeting with the top leadership of the entire Canadian forces.

He says the focus of the meeting was to assess the state of Canada’s work in Afghanistan and what can be achieved in the remaining 18 months of the current mission.
