PARAKH, July 8 (Pajhwok Afghan News): An Italian-funded emergency hospital in the northern Panjsher province, closed two months back, reopened on Monday.

The well-equipped medical facility was shut in protest against the arrest of Helmand Emergency Hospital Director Dr. Rahmatullah Hanifi on the charge of having links to Taliban militants.

Panjsher Emergency Hospital chief Dr. Akbar Jan confirmed to Pajhwok Afghan News the staff reported back for duty on Sunday after a two-month protest over their colleagues detention.

Gino Strada, head of emergency hospitals across the country, had appealed to the government for the release of Hanifi, but his demand was bluntly turned down. As a result, all emergency hospitals across Afghanistan were closed.

Following Hanifis release, Jan said, the hospitals had restarted operations in Kabul and Panjsher. The Helmand hospital too would reopen soon, Dr. Jan added.
