KABUL (PAN): The government of Sweden, scrapping work permits of Afghan refugees, had said they will be given aid on repatriation to their homeland. The problem cropped up in the wake of a trilateral agreement on voluntary repatriation of Afghan refugees in Sweden signed among Afghanistan, Sweden and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The Sweden-based Afghan Association complained in an open letter, emailed to Pajhwok Afghan News on Monday, the refugees were being forced out, and that there was no justification for the cancellation of their work permits. In Kabul, Refugee Affairs Ministry Media Officer Abdul Haq Atid said the agreement – reached last week – allowed refugees with the requisite documents to stay on in Sweden. But the Afghans, whose appeals for refugee status had not been granted hitherto, would have to return home voluntarily, the official explained while referring to the accord. According to the associations letter, no one is ready for voluntary repatriation, given the unfavourable situation in Afghanistan. Most refugees did not want to leave their jobs and education in Sweden and return home country in five months, as stipulated in the agreement, the letter concluded.
