Reporters Without Borders / April 3, 2008
Reporters Without Borders condemns an arson attack that caused serious damage to Radio Zafar in Paghman, near Kabul, on 29 March. “The authorities must carry out a thorough investigation into this attack, in which fortunately no one was injured,” the organisation said.
Gunmen stormed the radio station before dawn, overpowered security guards and set fire to the studio, destroying transmitters, radio receivers, editing equipment and computers. Radio Zafar’s owner, Najibullah Naseer, estimated the damage at more than 20,000 euros.
Created four years ago, the station is a member of the Salam Watandar network and receives assistance from the Internews organisation. It broadcast local news, religious programmes and music. Militants had accused the station of being “morally corrupt”and “anti-Islamic.” The police are investigating the attack but have not yet made any arrests.
